The Champions League round- of-16 matchup between Italy’s Inter Milan and Germany’s Bayern Munich is a rematch of last year’s Cup Final which Milan took with relative ease. They’ll also have the edge in the first leg of this tie as the game’s set for San Siro Stadium in Milan on Feb. 23rd.

But the biggest advantage the Italian club has is the fact it got rid of former manager Rafael Benitez a couple of months ago. With Benitez still in charge I’d have to say Inter would be going into this game as underdogs. The club seems to have lost some of its sparkle ever since Jose Mourinho walked away as manager during the summer after leading them to a treble of the Italian League and Cup and the Champions League last season.

Benitez took over and dragged them down to his level, but they’ve slowly started to regain form under new boss Rossonero Leonardo and have won two of their past three games. Inter has also made up five points on Italian league leaders AC Milan since he took over. This will be his first Champions league game in charge of the club and the pressure will be on the reigning champions.

Bayern should be pumped for the game too. There should be some extra motivation to beat Inter after losing the final to them. Bayern could have been the team to win a treble last year if they’d beaten Inter in the Champions league as they also won the German Cup and Bundesliga. Revenge may not be on their minds, but there’s probably a bit of a bitter taste in their mouths still.

Munich has also won two of their past three matches and don’t seem to have a problem putting the ball in the net. However, they still trail Borussia Dortmund in the league since they’ve dropped their fair share of points. They take on an Inter team that may be without Wesley Sneijder, Lucio, Diego Milito, and Walter Samuel. However, it won’t be a surprise of Sneijder and Lucio take to the field. Bayern might be missing Ivica Olic for the match.

Argentinean Esteban Cambiasso has been playing excellent football for Inter and the captain leads by example. He can set the tempo for a game and Bayern needs to be wary of him, meaning they can’t give him time and room with the ball. Bayern will be hoping winger Arjen Robben can play up to par and cause some trouble on the flank and in the box. When he’s on his game he’s pretty tough to handle.

Predictions and Odds for Inter vs Bayern Munich

Bayern is used to the quick pace of the Bundesliga while Inter is more used to the slower Serie A in Italy. The best thing for Bayern to do here is take the game to the Italian side and don’t slow it down for them. Bayern might let the odd goal in, but they have the power to win games 3-2. If they do slow the pace down, it’s doubtful they’ll win and a 1-1 draw is more likely.

William Hill has the odds of an Inter win listed at 5/4, with a Bayern win at 23/10 and a draw going for 21/10. A 1-1 draw is listed at 6/1.
