We went 3-1 on the first two games this week and due to certain circumstances I was unable to provide my picks for the last two games of the week. Hamilton and Calgary managed to win their games on Saturday, which means we aren’t going to see much of a change to our CFL power rankings.
Montreal Alouettes (5-1) showed everyone this week why they’re atop of the power rankings. Montreal defeated the Roughriders by a score of 30-26, which wasn’t quite enough to cover the spread. Calvillo has started where he left off last season this season and was just awarded player of the month honours. Unless the Alouettes start losing they’re going to remain in the number one spot on my power rankings.
Calgary Stampeders (5-1) have been having a great season thus far and could even be undefeated if it weren’t for the lead they blew against the Argonauts in week 3. After the loss, the Stampeders have won three straight games against the Roughriders, Blue Bombers and Lions. Winnipeg and B.C. aren’t the toughest opponents in the league, but these are the types of games that can often be overlooked by a team like Calgary.
Saskatchewan Roughriders (4-2) remain in the #3 slot in my power rankings this week even though they suffered a loss. Saskatchewan lost a close game against the Alouettes this week, but the game could have easily gone their way. Durant is the first QB this season to break the 2000 yards passing plateau and he’s been working the ball around his receiving core nicely. Cates is also having a great season so far with 497 rushing yards (3rd in League) and 5 TD’s (T-1st in League).
Toronto Argonauts (4-2) have been a surprise all season and they continue to turn heads. The Argos are sitting in 2nd place in the East Division right now and right on the heels of the Alouettes. Toronto is coming off a 29-28 victory against the Eskimos this past week where they pulled off a 4th quarter comeback after blowing the lead in the 3rd. I’m not sure why the Argonauts were underdogs in this game, but I’m sure they’ll begin getting more respect if they keep winning.
Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2-4) were expected to be a playoff contender this season, but they have some work to do if they even want to make the playoffs. This past week they were able to knock off the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, which is why they moved up 1 spot in the power rankings. Hamilton’s QB Glenn has been getting better every game and now has 1886 passing yards (2nd in League) and 11 TD’s (3rd in League).
Winnipeg Blue Bombers (2-4) moved down a spot this week after being defeated by Hamilton. Winnipeg hasn’t been able to find any consistency yet this season and really need a win next week, as they play Hamilton again. Both teams are tied for last in the East right now and whoever loses next week will be in trouble. Jyles threw for 349 yards, 2 TD’s and 0 INT’s this past week, but Glenn had an amazing game for Hamilton and outshined the young Jyles.
B.C. Lions (1-5) played Calgary this past week and lost the game 27-22 despite putting up a good fight in the 4th quarter. The Lions need to play an entire game of football if they want to win a game anytime soon. Not having Printers in the line-up has definitely crippled the Lions this season and I can’t see them getting out of the basement. Both Lulay and Jackson threw for 1 INT apiece last week with no TD’s between them the entire game.
Edmonton Eskimos (1-5) I feel are the worst team in the CFL this season. Edmonton had a great 3rd quarter this past week, but was unable to shutdown the Argos offence in the 4th quarter. The team has fired their GM and I expect more changes to start happening sooner rather then later. Things are only going to get harder this coming week, as the Eskimos need to travel to Calgary for a tough Sunday night game.
