Hamilton Tiger-Cats (1-2) and the Montreal Alouettes (2-1) will square off against each other Thursday night at 7:30PM. The game will be the first home game for the Alouettes and I’m sure after three straight weeks on the road they’re glad to be home. This will also be the first game in the renovated Percival Molson Memorial Stadium.

This past week, the Tiger-Cats managed to piece together their first victory of the season against the Blue Bombers. The defence had a great game last week and only gave up 7 points against Winnipeg who has been a high scoring team this season. Tiger-Cats QB Glenn also had a fantastic game last week going 29-36 with 336 yards and 3 TD’s. The running game is still struggling, as Cobb was only able to run for 53 yards on 11 carries.

Montreal had a rough game this past week against the B.C. Lions and they need to improve upon their performance if they want to compete for the Grey Cup again. The Alouettes will be happy to walk out of B.C. with a victory, as they’ve had terrible luck playing there, but it wasn’t a game to remember. The offence didn’t score a TD all game and if it weren’t for the 4 FG’s by Duval they would have ended up losing the game.

This match-up is going to be all about the QB’s and defence in my opinion. Tiger-Cats QB Glenn has been improving each week this season and he owns the second best QB rating with 110.0. Glenn is also first place in completion percentage with 70% of his passes finding the target and third in the league in passing yards with 889 yards.

Alouettes QB Calvillo is always ranked near the top of the stat leaderboards and this year isn’t any different. Calvillo is sitting in second place right now in both passing yards (902 yards) and touchdowns (6TD’s). Calvillo has also been doing a wonderful job of spreading the football around this year. Six Montreal receivers have over 10 catches on the season and over 100 yards in receiving.

Betting Lines (From Sportsbook.com)

Hamilton Tiger-Cats +7 vs. Montreal Alouettes –7
Hamilton Tiger-Cats vs. Montreal Alouettes O/U 53 Points

Last season Hamilton did well ATS when playing the Alouettes in Montreal going 2-0. They did lose both of the games, but the Alouettes couldn’t cover the big 13-point spread and 14.5 point spread. This game the Alouettes are only favoured by 7 points and I think they should be able to cover the spread on Thursday night. Last season the two games played between these teams in Montreal ended with scores of 41-38 and 21-8.

There are a few trends pointing in the direction of both teams this week and it should be interesting to see which trends are broken on Thursday. Hamilton is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games and their last 5 games against the East Division. Montreal is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games against teams with losing records. The most notable trend is the fact that the Tiger-Cats are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games against the Alouettes when playing in Montreal.

With the Tiger-Cats playing great on defence I would usually lean towards the under in this type of game, but with Montreal playing in a sold out home opener in a newly renovated stadium, I can see lots of points. Last week the Alouettes didn’t score an offensive touchdown and I think the coaches will ensure they receive a better performance from their players this week. The over is 6-0 when Montreal plays a team with a losing record and 4-0 when they play a team from the CFL East Division. It also helps that the Alouettes have gone over the total 7 times in their past 9 games.

My Picks – Montreal Alouettes –7 & Over 53 Points
