CFL Week 3 – Edmonton Eskimos vs. Saskatchewan Roughriders Lines & Picks

The Edmonton Eskimos (0-2) will be in for a tough battle when they meet-up with the Saskatchewan Roughriders (2-0) today at 4:00PM EST in Regina. These two teams have had completely different starts to the season and it’s going to be vital for Edmonton to come out firing on all cylinders today. With Hamilton winning last night, the Eskimos are the only team left without a victory.

So far this season the Eskimos have looked pretty bad and it’s not going to get any easier against the Roughriders. Edmonton opened up the season at home and lost 25-10 to the B.C. Lions. Last week Edmonton was at home again and lost to Montreal by a score of 33-23, which was a definite improvement over their week one performance.

The Roughriders had a terrible ending to last season, but they have put the critics to rest by winning their first two games of the season against the Alouettes (54-51) and the Lions (37-18). Some people were unsure about whether or not the Roughriders would be able to bounce back this season after the devastating Grey Cup loss, but it appears to be fine in Regina.

Edmonton started off slowly in week one, but in week two they showed a lot of improvement. They had a lead against Montreal throughout most of the game, but they lost the lead after a terrible 4th quarter. The Eskimos could have sealed the game earlier on as well if they converted more of their offensive possessions into touchdowns. Edmonton kicked six field goals in the game last week and they need to do a better job of converting TD’s if they want to have a chance against the Roughriders.

The Roughriders shouldn’t have a problem this week at home against the Eskimos if they keep to their game. QB Darian Durant has had an impressive start to the season and leads all QB’s in passing yards with 733 yards. The Roughriders RB Cates is also on fire to begin the season and has already run for 205 yards in 2 games. The defence was a little shaky in week one, but they seem to have gotten on track in week two, as they held the Lions to only 18 points and forced two turnovers.

Predictions and Picks

I definitely can’t see the Roughriders losing at home today, but the big question is whether or not they will cover the spread. The Roughriders were able to win by 19 points last week as a small underdog and I can see them winning by double digits again today. One thing that scares me is that the road team has seen success in recent match-ups between these two teams. The Eskimos are also in a much tougher spot right now and should be playing with a little more fire then the Roughriders.

If you look at the scores from the Eskimos games this season it doesn’t tell you the entire story. The offence has struggled to punch the football into the endzone, but they haven’t had much trouble moving the ball downfield. The Roughriders have one of the best offences in the league this season and we all know that they can put up points in a hurry. The 57 points seems high, but I can see the game going over the posted total. The over has also cashed 8 out of 9 times when these two teams play in Regina, which makes me lean towards the over today.

My Picks – Roughriders –7 & Over 57 Points
