The Saskatchewan Roughriders (4-1) will visit the Montreal Alouettes (4-1) on Friday night in the team’s second match-up of this early season. The two teams already played against each other in the opening week and the Roughriders managed to win a close game that went into double overtime. The final score in the game was 54-51 and it ended up being the 3rd highest scoring game in CFL history. I wouldn’t expect as many points this week in Montreal though, as I’m sure both defences will be on their game.
Both teams are coming off of excellent week 5 games, but only one will be able to leave Montreal with their 5th win. Montreal destroyed the Alouettes last week 41-10 and the Roughriders had a bit more trouble, but managed to win the game 37-24 in a high scoring affair. I was a little worried about the Roughriders overlooking last week’s game, but they came out and played great. This week I can guarantee that both teams are going to be ready to play.
The Roughriders are still upset about the way they lost the Grey Cup last season to the Alouettes and Montreal is going to be looking for revenge after losing to the Roughriders in week 1. This is going to be the final meeting between these two teams unless they both meet-up in the playoffs again. I’m sure Montreal doesn’t want to possibly face the Roughriders in the postseason after losing 2 regular season games to them and they should come out inspired Friday night.
Anthony Calvillo has been putting up great numbers all year and currently leads the league with 1606 yards. He has also thrown the ball into the endzone 10 times, which is only 1 TD behind Henry Burris who is leading the league with 11. Avon Cobourne on the other hand hasn’t had that much success in the early part of the season. Cobourne only has 343 rushing yards (7th in league) with 3 TD’s and 2 fumbles.
Wes Cates is 2nd in the league with 466 rushing yards and is going to be important if the Roughriders want too win Friday. Cates also has 5 rushing TD’s and only 1 fumble on the season. Darian Durant has also been putting together another all-star season and is only 11 yards behind Calvillo with 1595 passing yards. What separates Durant and Calvillo currently this season is the fact that Durant has 5 INT’s compared to the 2 INT’s thrown by Calvillo.
Betting Lines (From Sportsbook.com)
- Saskatchewan Roughriders vs. Montreal Alouettes –7
- Saskatchewan Roughriders vs. Montreal Alouettes Over/Under 60 Points
Betting Picks
I really think that Montreal is going to find a way to win Friday night at home against the Roughriders. The stats are basically the same between these two teams and the –7 spread is a bit shocking. It may come right down to the wire in Montreal, but I really think that they’ll win by more then a touchdown. Saskatchewan bounced back nicely against Hamilton after losing 40-20 to the Stampeders in week 4, but I don’t think they’ll beat the Alouettes for the second time this season.
Both teams love to put up points, but I definitely think the bookies set the over/under way to high for this game. I know that they managed to score more then 100 points in week 1, but a good amount of those points came in overtime. I don’t think that these teams are going to put up more then 60 points Friday night and I’d definitely take the under. The under is also 10-1 the last 11 times that the Roughriders and Alouettes have played in Montreal.
