Celtics Thinking About Trading Ray Allen?

It was no more than a few seasons ago that the Boston Celtics were one of the worst teams in the NBA and seemed to have absolutely no hope for the future of the franchise. The only player on the team that was worth keeping around was sharp shooting Paul Pierce, but with no supporting cast, besides Antonie Walker a few years ago, Pierce and company were a guaranteed last place team.

Throughout NBA history the Boston Celtics have been the most successful franchise in the league’s history as they have won 18 NBA titles, which is one more than their hated rivals in the Los Angeles Lakers (17), but it is no easy task to competitive and amongst the league’s elite teams for an extended amount of time.

Two seasons ago, the Boston Celtics were sick and tired of losing and were set on turning around the franchise by rebuilding around Paul Pierce finally giving him the supporting cast he needs to become a title contender in the Eastern Conference.

Fortunately for Celtics GM and former Celtic great Danny Ainge, Boston was able to make a trade for sharp shooting guard Ray Allen from the Seattle Supersonics, now the Oklahoma City Thunder. At first the move was very questionable as it did make the team better, but not good enough to be the title contender the Celtics had sights set on.

Little did anyone know that the Ray Allen trade was the first of two big moves in an attempt to turn around the franchise as the Celtics then traded promising young forward Al Jefferson for future hall of fame forward Kevin Garnett from the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The move to get KG out of Minnesota was monumental to say the least as the Boston Celtics went from one of the worst teams in the NBA to one of the best in just one offseason.

The result of the new big three in Boston (Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett) was the Celtics NBA leading 18th NBA title.

Needless to say, things were good in Boston once again as over the last three seasons the Boston Celtics have been one of the best teams in the league.

Despite still be one of the most dominant teams in the NBA right now, especially on the defensive side of the basketball floor, the Celtics are not getting any younger and the trade talks have started to circulate with Ray Allen right in the middle of it.

The one name that keeps floating around that is getting a lot of interest from the Boston Celtics is the New York Knicks little man Nate Robinson. Now trading Ray Allen for Robinson doesn’t make sense in my opinion, but Allen has an expiring contract and if any big name player on the Celtics is going anywhere it will be Ray Allen.

  1. Tim says:

FYI, the Celtics have 17 titles not 18, the Lakers have 16 titles not 17.

The Celtics can not trade Ray Allen who is making 18 million this year for Nate Robinson who only makes 4 million a year, since the salaries of both players must match in order for a trade to be allowed.
