The Cleveland Cavaliers are trying all they can do right now to make a deal before the NBA trade deadline on February 18th. Amare Stoudemire is their number one priority right now in terms of interest in getting trade done, but what if the Miami Heat are able to offer a better deal to the Phoenix Suns?
With LeBron James becoming a free agent this summer, the Cavs need to make a move this season to surround King James with a player(s) that he can rely on before he decides to hit the road in the upcoming free agent market where plenty of teams will be throwing enormous amounts of money at arguably the best player in the league.
The one trade that keeps getting mentioned is with the Phoenix Suns which would involve All-Star forward/center Amare Stoudemire heading to Cleveland in exchange for youngster J.J. Hickson and veteran center Zydrunas Ilgauskas (and his expiring contract).
Reportedly, the deal has already been offered to the Phoenix Suns, but Suns GM Steve Kerr and company haven’t decided on whether or not to accept to offer as they are fielding offers from other teams like the Philadelphia 76ers and the Miami Heat.
If the deal doesn’t go down that would bring Amare Stoudemire to Cleveland, and the way it is going it probably won’t happen, the Cavs have some other players they are actively pursuing like Antawn Jamison, Andre Igoudala, Troy Murphy and Corey Maggette.
Even though I believe that the Washington Wizards Antawn Jamison would be the best option to go after if they can’t land Stoudemire, it looks like the Cavs might be leaning more in the direction of the Golden State Warriors Corey Maggette.
Apparently, the deal for Maggette would be involve Zydrunas Ilgauskas’ $11.5 million dollar expiring contract straight up, but it might also include the Cavs Danny Green and the Warriors Devean George to make the deal work financially.
Personally, I think Corey Maggette is overrated and nothing more than a scoring punch off the bench, but I suppose in the right system he could turn back into a solid starter and playing alongside LeBron James would give him the opportunity he needs.
