When the NBA trade deadline ended last Thursday and the dust started to settle with all the teams done wheeling and dealing for big name players, the NBA fans and analysts started to weigh in on which team came out on top.
The New York Knicks were one the teams that surprised most people as they were able to get Tracy McGrady and clear up and extra $9 million dollars for the free agent market this summer with players like LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh becoming available to the highest bidder.
Even though the Knicks may have really increased their chances of getting back to being a force to be reckoned with in the Eastern Conference next season, the Cleveland Cavaliers may have made the best trade of any team before the deadline by getting forward Antawn Jamison from the Washington Wizards.
The first trade to go down before the deadline was the Dallas Mavericks receiving Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson in exchange for Josh Howard and Drew Gooden who headed to the Washington Wizards. With a trade that substantial going down, the consensus was that the Wizards were done dealing, but fortunately for the Cavs they weren’t as they have finally decided to start clearing house after dealing with the whole Gilbert Arenas fiasco.
The Cleveland Cavaliers had their sights set on Amare Stoudemire from the Phoenix Suns, but the Suns weren’t interested in the deal the Cavs or the Miami Heat were offering for that matter and Cleveland GM Danny Ferry decided to reach to the Wizards and try and bring in Antawn Jamison to play alongside LeBron James.
Needless to say, the deal went down and the Cavs pulled off a deal that rivaled the deal the Los Angeles Lakers made for Pau Gasol a couple of seasons ago. So everyone in Cleveland was rejoicing, at least until Jamison played his first game as a Cav.
This past Friday Antawn Jamison played for the Cleveland Cavaliers for the first time since the trade against the Charlotte Bobcats which resulted in a 110-93 loss and a forgettable performance by Jamison who finished the game with two points on 0-12 shooting.
After the loss and the extremely bad performance by Jamison, people started to question the trade, but the former All-Star made up for it on Sunday with 19 points and eight rebounds against the Orlando Magic.
Unfortunately, the Cleveland Cavaliers still lost their three straight game 101-95 to the Magic, but seeing Jamison rebound from a dreadful performance was definitely a step in the right direction for LeBron James and company.
