Cash in at Fry’s

The Frys.com Open kicks off at the Grayhawk Golf Course in Scottsdale, Arizona this week. Just so you know, Fry’s is an electronics store that, unless you live in California or Texas, you have probably never heard of.

This week’s field is largely devoid of any big-time names, but you will recognize some PGA tour stalwarts kicking around who could make you some nice coin this week in the desert. (Vegas odds  to win the tournament are included with each player.)

Mike Weir  15/1

The smooth-swinging Canadian lefty comes into this tournament as the odds-on favourite – and for good reason. Weir is currently ranked 28th in the world, having earned $2.2 million in 2009. He has enjoyed five top 10 finishes this season but has yet to break through with a  victory. Keep in mind, Weir won this tourney in 2007 so he obviously has a high level of comfort on this track.

You can also get in on a Mike Weir vs. Justin Leonard match-up with Weir laying down a -135 money line.

Heath Slocum  60/1

These are nice odds for a guy who has performed just as well, if not better than the aforementioned Weir during the 2009 campaign.  He is currently ranked #35 in the world and recently won the star-studded The Barclays tournament that featured all of the PGA’s big guns. To win a tournament who’s top 10 featured the likes of Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Padraig Harrington and Steve Stricker is no insignificant achievement. This guy can play. At 60/1 he’s worth a bet.

Bo Van Pelt  50/1

Some more solid odds from a recent PGA winner. Van Pelt hoisted the trophy at the US Bank Championship in Milwaukee in mid-July. He has five top 10 finishes this season with one coming only two weeks ago at the Turning Stone Resort Championship, where he finished 7th.

Rest of the Field  3/5

While it’s a bit of a cop out bet, it can sometimes be a ton of fun hoping for a huge swath of players to beat the top contenders. The “rest of the field” includes last year’s winner, Cameron Beckman.
