After an epic and emotional first round series that ended with an overtime Game 7 win two nights ago, the Vancouver Canucks showed little signs of fatigue or letdown in a workmanlike 1-0 victory in the first game of their second round series at home against the Nashville Predators. The Canucks, owners of the NHL’s best regular season record, outshot the West’s No. 5 seed by a 30-20 margin.

Chris Higgins provided the game’s only goal at 12:14 of the second period, beating Nashville’s Pekka Rinne. Through two periods, the Canucks outshot the Predators 26-11, and Rinne felt his team’s start was way below its usual standards. “Obviously we respect their team, it’s a good hockey team but we just didn’t have it for the first two periods,” he explained. “Somehow we just didn’t have the jump.”

Predators coach Barry Trotz knows his squad will need more of a team effort to make this a competitive series. “We had way too many passengers,” said Trotz. “Especially at this high level of competition in the second round, you can’t play the way we did.”

The Predators may be able to take some confidence from playing so poorly for two periods and still having a decent chance to tie the game, but they also have to be kicking themselves for wasting such a good performance from their goalie. It doesn’t seem likely they’ll have four more chances in the next six games, but if Rinne can stay hot, who knows.
