For the second straight game, the Vancouver Canucks dominated the third period, building on a one-goal lead after the second intermission with four straight goals to rout the San Jose Sharks 7-3 and take a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference Finals. Canucks star Daniel Sedin had two power play goals in the game, while brother Henrik Sedin added three assists.
The Sharks gave the Canucks six power plays in Game 2, and Vancouver converted three of them, including their first two goals of the third period to break the game open. The Sharks scored two power play goals of their own in the first period to improve to a perfect 3-for-3 in the first two games, but didn’t get another power play opportunity over the final 40 minutes.
Daniel Sedin now has five power play goals in the playoffs to lead the league, and eight goals overall, tied for the league lead.
The only good news for the Sharks is that the next two games will be in San Jose, so if they can win Game 3, they’re still very much in this series. That’s what Sharks coach Todd McLellan wanted to focus on after Wednesday’s loss. “A real wise guy once told me that you’re never really, really in trouble in a series till you lose a game at home,” Todd McLellan said. “We haven’t done that, and we don’t plan on doing that.”
“We have to win the next game, we have to,” said San Jose’s Logan Couture, whose power play goal gave the Sharks a brief 1-0 lead in Game 2. “It’s as simple as that. We have to treat it like Game 7. We should have treated tonight like Game 7, but we didn’t.”
