The Vancouver Canucks clinched the first President’s Trophy, given to the team with the NHL’s best regular season record, for the first time in franchise history with a 3-1 home win over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night. The Canucks will have home-ice advantage for as long as they last in the playoffs, although the team hasn’t advanced past the second round since 1994.
The Canucks locked up the league’s top record with four games still remaining in the regular season, and also lead the NHL in scoring, goals allowed, power play and penalty killing. The Kings led 1-0 after the first period, but the Canucks went up for good when Christian Ehrhoff scored with just one second left in the second period.
Vancouver captain Henrik Sedin, who was last season’s NHL MVP, downplayed the importance of the franchise’s first President’s Trophy:
It was a nice ovation from the fans. It feels good for everyone in here and feels good for the fans, too, I think. But at the same time, we’ve got more things coming ahead of us. [Winning the President’s Trophy and getting home-ice] means we’ve got a great team. It doesn’t mean that we’re going to win it all. But it means we have a great shot at it, and it’s up to us in here.
The Kings are in fifth place in the Western Conference, seven points ahead of ninth-place Dallas Stars for the final playoff spot. Elsewhere, the San Jose Sharks became the second team in the West to clinch a playoff spot with their 6-0 win over Dallas on Thursday night. The Tampa Bay Lightning became the fifth Eastern Conference team to clinch a playoff berth with a 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
