In their first regular season meeting since last year’s Eastern Conference Finals, the Montreal Canadiens got a small measure of revenge in a 3-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. The Canadiens raised some eyebrows trading away their star playoff goalie Jaroslav Halak, but Carey Price has been just as good if not better in net, recording his third shutout of the season.
Price stopped all 41 Flyer shots on Tuesday night, improving his record to 11-5-1 with a .930 saves percentage and 2.05 goals against average. Halak has been nearly as good in St. Louis, with a 8-3-2 record, three shutouts of his own and a .918 SV% and 2.12 GAA. Flyers rookie goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky took the loss Tuesday, but he’s been no slouch either (11-3-1, .932, 2.07).
The win was Montreal’s fourth straight, and at 12-5-1 they lead the Northeast Division are rank third in the Eastern Conference. During the four game winning streak, the Canadiens have outscored opponents 15-3. The Flyers (12-5-2) had gone 9-0-1 in their previous 10 games before Tuesday’s shutout loss, and remain atop the Atlantic Division, one point ahead of Montreal in the conference standings. The Canadiens also are without star defenseman Andrei Markov indefinitely, but are 8-2-1 this season without him.
Flyers coach Peter Laviolette thought his team was pretty disheartened by the third period:
The shots were heavily in our favor, the chances were heavily in our favor, but we’re down on the scoreboard. It was one of those games where you’re trying to dig out of a hole but you can’t get there. Their goaltender played pretty well. I think the frustration kind of built through the third period. Seriously, I thought we played hard. The third period, we didn’t play the same way, I think we just got frustrated that we couldn’t get on the board.
The two teams will meet again in Philadelphia next Monday.
