Cameroon soccer player killed by rock thrown from his own fans

Soccer hooligans around the world aren’t really known as the smartest bunch due to their violent nature. However, this unfortunate incident represents a new low in common sense. A player in the city of Tizi Ouzou, Algeria was killed recently when struck in the head by a rock which was thrown from the stands by his own fans. The 24-year-old player named Albert Ebosse was a Cameroonian striker who was playing abroad for an Algerian club called JS Kabylie. Ebosse’s team lost their August 23rd home match 2-1 against USM Alger with the striker scoring his side’s goal on a penalty kick.

Ebosse, who led the his league in scoring last season, was struck by the rock after the match had ended and the players were asking off the pitch. Reports said JS Kabylie fans threw objects at the players as they were upset about the team’s loss. Ebosse was taken to a hospital less than half a mile from the stadium, but doctors couldn’t revive him and he died there.

The president of the African football confederation Issa Hayatou said he expects police action to be taken against the violent culprits. The Algerian government has ordered an investigation into the incident and it was revealed that Mahfoud Kerbadj, the president of the Algerian league, was at the match, but left just before the final whistle. Kerbadj said, “I am still finding this tragic death hard to grasp because I was at the stadium just minutes before this tragic incident and Albert Ebosse was still running in all senses of the word before my eyes.”

The Algeria Football Federation held emergency meetings following the death of Ebosse and the JS Kabylie home stadium was shut down until further notice. The president of the Federation said he hopes the hooligans who threw the rocks are severely punished. Ebosse joined the Kabylie club in 2013 and scored 17 times to help the side finish as league runners up to USM Alger, the club they were playing against when Ebosse was killed.

USM Alger was also saddened over the player’s death and released a statement which offered condolences to his family and friends. Ebosse’s body was taken from the hospital to a local military hospital and it will be flown back to his African homeland of Cameroon.
