On Wednesday, police in Florida released 42 pages of documents, plus audio and video that shed new light on the night last month that Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and two counts of resisting an officer without violence. Cabrera allegedly threatened to blow up a bar and told arresting officers “F***ing shoot me! Kill me!”
About an hour before his arrest, Cabrera had been asked to leave Cowboys Bar-B-Q & Steak Co. after barging in after last call. The bar manager says Cabrera told her, “I will kill you. I know all of you, and I will kill all of you and blow this place up.” A patron of the establishment who was also an off-duty fish and wildlife agent said Cabrera indicated he had a gun in his bag. Cabrera eventually left, and while the manager called 911, she told the dispatcher that it was “not an emergency.”
Cops rolled up on Cabrera’s Land Rover pulled over on the side of the road, overheated and with its hazard lights on. Cabrera got out of his car, then mumbled something about killing someone after being asked if anyone else was in the car. Cabrera then got back in his car, resumed drinking scotch (there’s apparently four pages of photos of the open scotch bottle in the released documents) and flipped off the cops.
Cabrera was later walking around in the middle of the road yelling shoot me! and don’t you know who I am? and all that, and didn’t obey orders until a cop pulled a taser on him. Cabrera’s lawyer wouldn’t comment on the released documents, but it’s unlikely the star slugger will get any jail time.
