Bubba Watson won The Masters on Sunday after a two-hole sudden playoff with 2010 British Open champion Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa, giving Americans two straight major championships. Bubba rallied from four shots down over the final 16 holes of regulation to force the playoff, then came back from a tee shot into the woods on the second playoff hole to par the hole and claim the coveted Green Jacket.
Bubba’s first shot on the second playoff hole found the woods and rested about 165 yards from the hole, but he found a way to hit an incredible hook shot off pine needles that left him just 10 feet from the hole. Bubba then two-putted for bogey to win the tournament, after Oosthuizen missed his own par putt from the fringe.
Bubba credited his caddy with keeping him calm and confident before the biggest shot of his life. “My caddy told me all the time, you’re a good golfer, you’re here for a reason, you can do this, you’ve done this all before, you just have to do it as this moment,” said Bubba. “That’s the thing we’ve all hit these shots, it’s just doing it at this moment, that’s the trick.”
“It looked like a curveball going to the right,” said runner-up Oosthuizen of Watson’s amazing second shot. “That shot he hit definitely won him the tournament.”
Speaking of Woods, Tiger Woods finished 5-over for the tournament and tied for 40th place. It was Tiger’s highest score to par at The Masters as a professional. Phil Mickelson, Matt Kuchar and Peter Hanson tied for third.
