Bubba Watson was just a touch better than Phil Mickelson on Sunday to win the 2011 Farmers Insurance Open by one stroke. Earlier in the day, Tiger Woods finished a terrible weekend despite playing a course where he had won his last five tournaments. And over in Bahrain, England’s Paul Casey won the inaugural Volvo Golf Champions.
Watson put all the pressure on Mickelson by making a nine-foot putt to save par on No. 17, then draining a 12-foot birdie putt on No. 18 to get to 16-under. That left Mickelson needing to make a 72-foot wedge shot for eagle on No. 18 to force a playoff. Mickelson came within four feet of the tie, but instead had to settle for a final birdie and a runner-up finish two strokes ahead of Dustin Johnson and Jhonattan Vegas.
Tiger started decent with 69s on Thursday and Friday, but only managed scores of 74 and 75 on Saturday and Sunday to finish at 1-under, tied for 44th place. Tiger was not only 15 shots off the lead, he also ended the tournament two shots behind amateur Anthony Paolucci, an 18-year-old high school senior at La Jolla Country Day.
Casey won the European Tour’s first-ever event in Bahrain, finishing one stroke ahead of Sweden’s Peter Hanson and Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez.
As for our head-to-head picks, we were 3-2 in Bahrain, but just 2-4 at the Farmers for our first losing week of the year. Our record for the year though is still a pretty respectable 21-12-4.
