Sunday night in Edmonton, the Boston Bruins won their fifth straight game, all on the road to open a six-game road trip. The Northeast Division-leading Bruins fell behind early in the first, then got three unanswered goals and held on for a 3-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers, who own the worst record in the NHL. Recently acquired Rich Peverley scored his first goal with the Bruins with 52 seconds left in the second period to give Boston a two-goal lead.
“This trip has been a great opportunity for us to introduce our new players to the hockey club by being on the road,” said Boston coach Claude Julien. “The timing was good. We’ve got a better record on the road than we do at home. We seem to play some really good, smart games on the road. Hopefully we can carry that back to Boston and be a little bit better there.”
This season, the Bruins are now an NHL-best 21-7-4 on the road, but just 15-12-3 at home. That’s been good enough for Boston to open up a six-point lead over Montreal in the Northeast.
The Bruins outshot the Oilers 32-12 through the first two periods, and 40-17 over the entire game, but Oilers coach Tom Renney was pleased his team was able to make it close in the third. “We just kept playing and wouldn’t go away, which is important,” said Renney. “We did everything we could to play through it and play with them. I thought we did a pretty darn good job against one of the better teams in the National Hockey League.”
