The Boston Bruins rallied from a goal down in the third period before beating the Florida Panthers in a shootout for their 10th road win of the season. With the victory Boston (19-11-4) moves into first place in the Northeast Division, ahead of the Montreal Canadiens, who at 20-14-2 have the same number of points but have played two more games.
Forward David Krejci tied the game 2-2 at the 10:35 mark of the third period with his second goal of the night on an assist from linemate Blake Wheeler. The only goal of the shootout came off the stick of Blake Wheeler, who had trouble controlling the puck before pinballing it off the post and Florida goalie Scott Clemmensen’s ankle and into the back of the net.
“It just kind of snuck off my stick there,” said Wheeler. “Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good, right?”
Bruins netminder Tim Thomas was perfect in the shutout and made 32 saves on the night. Clemmensen stopped 40 Bruins shots in the losing effort.
The win was Boston’s first in four shootouts this season, and Florida’s first shootout loss in three ties. The Panthers are now 16-17-1 and in 11th place in the Eastern Conference, nine points behind the Canadiens for the East’s final playoff spot.
