Champ Bailey may be 33, but he’s been to more Pro Bowls than any other cornerback in NFL history. So maybe it’s not that surprising that the Denver Broncos gave Bailey a four-year, $43 million contract extension on Tuesday. The deal includes $22 million in guaranteed money and could go as high as $47 million with incentive bonuses.

The deal is the first major move since former star quarterback John Elway took over the Broncos front office. “He was a guy we wanted to keep in the building,” said Elway. “He’s still a great player. He’s the best player on our football team right now and we couldn’t lose him.

Bailey’s agent says the deal is easily the most money ever given to a cornerback in his 30s. Bailey is scheduled to get an $11 million annual salary in 2011 and 2012, then $10.5 million in 2013 and 2014. Last October, the Broncos, then led by since-fired head coach Josh McDaniels, offered Bailey a deal with similar years and numbers, then rescinded it before the corner and his agent had a chance to respond.

Bailey says he’s just glad McDaniels is gone. “I know I could have got something worked out once Josh McDaniels left,” said the cornerback. “And things did work out, didn’t they?”

“I played with Champ back in Washington and I still see that same technique today,” former teammate Matt Bowen wrote on Yahoo! Sports. “That’s why he is worth the investment, because he treats the game like a pro. And having veteran talent is key for new head coach John Fox. Players like Champ are easy to coach.
