Earlier this month, the Milwaukee Brewers added starting pitchers Shaun Marcum and Zack Greinke. Now they’re working on strengthening their bullpen and have reportedly agreed to a one-year deal with free agent right-hander Takashi Saito, who spent last season with the Atlanta Braves. Saito is expected to serve as eighth-inning set up man to closer John Axford and will hopefully grow a matching mustache.
Saito, who will be 41 by Opening Day, also brings experience closing should Axelford need rest or get injured. From 2006-2008, Saito saved 81 games for the Dodgers in his first three Major League seasons. After leaving the Dodgers, Saito has primarily been in a setup role, first for the Red Sox in 2009 and then for the Braves in 2010.
According to mlb.com, Saito’s base salary will be under $2 million, but includes bonuses for completing games that could push his salary closer to the $3.2 million he made last year in Atlanta. The Brewers won’t officially announce the deal until next week because their offices are lazy and want to have the whole week between Christmas and New Years off. Brewers general manager Doug Melvin confirmed the deal, but said he won’t comment until its official.
Saito’s main Brewers connection is his agent, who also represents new Brewer Zack Greinke and old Brewers Ryan Braun and Corey Hart.
