A lot of fans stay away from pro soccer games in Brazil as they feel they’re not really safe. Hooliganism often runs rampant down in South America’s biggest country and the rioting sometimes results in death. One club is trying to figure out the best way to stop the trouble and they believe they have the answer. The team believes if it hires the mothers of fans to act as security guards then there won’t be any more trouble, at least temporarily. Sport Club do Recife therefore decided to hire several mothers to provide security for their match in the Classico dos Classicos game with their rivals Nautico.

The women are known as Seguranca Mae in Portuguese, the language of Brazil, and it translates into English as Security Moms. According to reports from the Brazilian media, the women have all received regular security-guard training and will be wearing bright orange vests when they patrol the perimeter of the pitch. The club has hired 30 women and it will also broadcast their images on the stadium’s giant TV screen during the contest to help deter any violence.

Aricio Fortes, who works for a Brazilian public relations firm known as Ogilvy, told the press, “At the end of the day, no one wants to fight in front of a mother, especially his own. In fact, it was Fortes’ company that came up with the unique and creative idea.” He added, “The idea was to make the most fanatical supporters aware and help in some way to bring peace to stadiums.”

Apparently the idea worked out well as Sport Club do Recife defeated their rivals 1-0 and there were no arrests during the contest. Something definitely needed to be done since Recife has seen more than its fair share of football violence over the past few years. It’s gotten so bad that the U.S. State Department has declared the city to be as having the highest level of assaults in the nation.

Gangs called torcidas organizadas are formed in the slums known as favelas and they often take out their differences on each other at football matches. According to official statistics, there have been 234 deaths in Brazil that were football related from 1988 to 2013 with 30 of them coming in 2013. Since the idea of security moms worked the first time around don’t be surprised to see the use of female security guards increase at football matches in Brazil.
