Rookie Keegan Bradley rallied from five shots down with three holes to play to force and then win a three-hole playoff with Jason Dufner to win the 2011 PGA Championship. Bradley, the nephew of LPGA legend Pat Bradley, became only the third golfer in the past 98 years to win a major in his first try, and ended the longest-ever drought of American major winners at six.

Bradley triple-bogeyed No. 15 to fall five shots back, but birdied the next two holes as Dufner struggled on the treacherous final four holes And Bradley did it while wearing Tiger red and throwing in the occasional celebratory fist pump. After the win, Bradley said his dream was to be like the last American major winner and not like 14-time major winner Tiger Woods, who missed the cut this week for the first time ever at a PGA Championship. “I would love to be up in a category with the best players and be mentioned with Phil Mickelson, one of my idols,” said Bradley. “I hope I don’t disappear. I don’t plan to.”

Bradley started the tournament as a 125/1 longshot, which makes him the biggest longshot to win the PGA Championship since Rich Beem won in 2002 at 150/1. One asset manager turned a $400 bet on Bradley this week into a $50,000 jackpot.

Aunt Pat won six majors, so her nephew is happy to add something to the family legacy, as is Keegan’s mom. “My grandmother used to ring a cow bell to commemorate Pat’s wins,” Keegan explains. “The bell is now in the Hall of Fame, I’ve actually visited it a few times. My mother has started her own tradition of taking some wind chimes and running up and down the street like a crazy woman. It’s a cool thing to be mentioned with her [Pat]. We’ve both won majors, it’s remarkable. It almost gives me chills.”
