Both Wild Card Races Tied With One Game Left

With only one game left in the regular season, both the American League and National League wild card standings are now a dead heat. After blowing a huge lead, the Boston Red Sox are tied with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the AL, and after blowing almost as huge a lead, the Atlanta Braves are tied with the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL.

If a winner-takes-all playoff is necessary in the AL, it would be played Thursday at Tampa’s historic Tropicana Field at 4:07 Eastern time. If one is necessary in the NL, the Cardinals would host the Braves at 8:07 Eastern on Thursday night.

The Braves, losers of 12 of their last 17, will first try to avoid a three-game sweep at home on Wednesday night, sending Tim Hudson out to start against Philadelphia’s Joe Blanton, with Cole Hammels also expected to get some relief work for the Phillies. Last year, the Braves clinched the NL Wild Card on the last day of the season, with Hudson starting and the Phillies using starting pitchers like it was a spring training game. Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter will start Wednesday in Houston, facing Astros starter Brett Myers.

David Price will start for the Devil Rays on Wednesday, facing the Yankees at home. The Red Sox go with Jon Lester against Orioles starter Alfredo Simon in Baltimore.
