Before the NBA trade deadline on the February 18th, the Cleveland Cavaliers GM Danny Ferry pulled the trigger on deal that would bring All-Star caliber forward Antawn Jamison to Cleveland. In exchange for Jamison, the Cavs sent big man Zydrunas Ilgauskas to the Washington Wizards where he never played a single minute and was eventually bought out and made a free agent.
One of the main reasons for making this deal, besides the fact that Jamison could be the missing piece to the championship puzzle for the Cleveland Cavaliers, is that that Cavs knew the Wizards would just buyout Big Z which would make him a free agent and available for Cleveland to sign in 30 days time.
Well, that time has come and gone and even though a few teams inquired about signing the big man like the Atlanta Hawks and the Dallas Mavericks, Zydrunas Ilgauskas has made it clear that he only wants to play in Cleveland and who can blame them as they have a very good chance of winning an NBA title this season.
Unfortunately for the Cleveland Cavaliers, once they made the deal to send their backup big man to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Antawn Jamison, their starting center Shaquille O’Neal went down with a finger injury which will keep him out for the rest of the NBA regular season.
Talk about bad luck and bad timing!
Even though the Cavs have been without Shaq they have still be able to stay on top of the league with the NBA’s best record. The one goal the Cavs have at the moment is to clinch the NBA’s best record heading into the playoffs to get home court advantage. They will have to beat out the defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers who are three and half games back of LeBron James and company.
This Monday will be the day that Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Cleveland Cavaliers GM Danny Ferry can discuss him rejoining the team, but when the two sides do come to terms, and they almost certainly will, the Cavs will have to make room on their roster which means they will have to get rid of one of these three players:
Point guard Sebastian Telfair (currently injured, 4.2 ppg, 2.9 apg, 1.1 rpg, 14.9 mins per game)
Forward Darnell Jackson (0.7 ppg, 4.2 mins per game)
Rookie guard Danny Green (2.4 ppg, 5.9 mins per game)
