Todd Bertuzzi and the Detroit Red Wings had a pretty good weekend. Bertuzzi scored two goals on Friday to help the Red Wings to a 6-1 road win over the Boston Bruins, then added two more on Sunday as the Wings completed a home-and-home sweep of Boston with a 4-2 victory. On Friday, Bertuzzi also recorded his 700th career point.
After the ugly loss at home on Friday, the Bruins came out stronger on Sunday, taking the lead twice in the first period. Detroit retook control in the second period, outshooting Boston 19-6 and turning a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead on goals by Pavel Datsyuk and Kris Draper.
With under seven minutes left in the game, the Red Wings broke out on a 2-on-1 and Bertuzzi broke Boston’s backs with his second goal of the night and 12th of the season. “That kind of put the nail in the coffin,” said Bruins coach Claude Julien.
“I just seem to be in the right spots,” said Bertuzzi. With the win, the Red Wings (34-16-6) are seven points up on the Nashville Predators for first place in the Central Division, and remain in second place in the Western Conference, seven points behind the Vancouver Canucks. The Bruins lost back-to-back games in regulation for the first time since mid-December, and at 31-18-7, have just a one-point lead on the Montreal Canadiens in the Northeast Division. The Canadiens have played one more game than the Bruins.
