New York Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran appeared in his first pretend game of the spring on Sunday afternoon, going 1-for-3 as the designated hitter and scoring a run as the Mets won an exhibtion game against the Boston Red Sox. Beltran, 33, played in just 64 games last season after having knee surgery in January 2010.

Beltran will move from center to right field this season, but is still probably a week away from playing in the field during a pretend game. His hit, a single, came in his first at-bat in the second inning, batting lefthanded against Michael Bowden. He later popped out twice from the right side. But the moment that had new Mets manager Terry Collins holding his breath was when Beltran scored from second on a Daniel Murphy single.

“I thought it was huge,” said Collins. “That was a brighter spot than what he did at the plate for me. I can’t tell you what was going through my mind. He came around third base and he was running good. I watched him the whole way.

“He did a tremendous job getting a jump,” said Mets third base coach Chip Hale. “If I see he has a good chance to score, I’m gonna send him. He’s physically ready to play. He’s running good.”
