Bjorn Rebney, Bellator commander-in-chief, announced the semi-final fights for the promotion’s lightweight tournament during a press conference earlier this afternoon.

The brackets leading up to the finals will be filled with matches between Roger Huerta vs. Pat Curran and Toby Imada vs. Carey Vanier, the winners will square off at the conclusion of Season 2 for a chance to face Bellator lightweight champion, Eddie Alvarez.

Furthermore, the announcement was by Rebney at Boston’s Wang Theater, the venue for Bellator’s May 6th show, headlined by a “Super Fight” between Alvarez and UFC veteran Josh Neer.  Both Alvarez and Curran were along side Rebney for the announcement.

During the press conference, the Bellator brass expressed his own personal excitement for the Boston event.

“As a fan, I can’t wait for our May 6th show in Boston ,” Rebney said. “Alvarez vs. Neer should be explosive, with Eddie making his first appearance in the U.S. since he won our lightweight title last summer.

Huerta vs. Curran just got really interesting coming off of Pat’s one punch KO of previously undefeated Mike Ricci. Toby’s world class submission wrestling vs. Carey’s world class wresting should be a great fight as well.”

Rebney was referring to Bellator’s last offering, at the Chicago Theater, where fans got to witness a night of highlight reel finishes.  Curran’s devastating overhand right knockout of undefeated Mike Ricci in the first round has become an instant youtube classic.

Bellator is gaining a reputation for hosting exciting matches between competitors that avoid letting fights go the distance.  For Bellator 14, along with Curran, Imada finished his fight by submitting James Krause with a guillotine choke on the Chicago card last Thursday.

Huerta, another fellow semi-finalist, is also coming off a submission victory over Chad Hinton, after putting him into a knee-bar in the third round, at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida.  From the same card, Carey Vanier, also a semi-finalist, finished Joe Duarte by TKO in the third round.
