Boston Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett looked like his dominant old self in a 4-0 win over the New York Yankees on Sunday night. In eight shutout innings, Beckett allowed just two hits and struck out 10. Marco Scutaro broke the game open in the seventh inning with a two-run double off Joba Chamberlain. After a dreadful 0-6 start to the season, the Red Sox took two of three games from the Yankees this weekend.
Despite their poor start, the Red Sox are confident their season won’t be defined by its first week. “The way I think about it, we’re four games out of first place with 153 to go,” said Boston’s diminutive second baseman Dustin Pedroia. “That’s a long f***ing way away. I’m not very smart, but it looks doable.”
Beckett had double-digit strikeouts for the first time since July 2009, and at one point retired 14 straight Yankee hitters. “He was really good tonight,” said Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira, who struck out three times Sunday night. “Some nights you beat yourself up and some nights you tip your cap and this was one of those nights.”
Teixiera hasn’t had a hit since Tuesday and went 0-for-12 with six strikeouts over the three games in Boston.
