According to police reports, a 60-year-old Atlanta Braves fan fell to his death during a game at Turner Field on August 30th. Gregory Murrey fell from the upper deck of the ball park during the Braves vs New York Yankees as controversial star Alex Rodriguez was coming up to the plate for New York. Some fans said the man moved toward the railing at the stadium to jeer Rodriguez. The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office later identified the victim as Murrey, who hails from the community of Alpharetta.

Murrey’s family released a press statement following the incident which read, “Gregory “Ace” Murrey was a husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend to many. He dearly loved his family, Atlanta, and the Atlanta Braves. Greg was a season ticket holder with the same seats for 23 years. The night Greg passed away, he was doing one of his favorite things – watching the Braves.”

Fans watching the game live on television heard of the news of the fall from the broadcasting crew of Fox Sports. The announcers were shocked at seeing Murrey fall and told the TV audience that somebody had fallen from the upper deck and landed right below them. They also said the fall happened just in front of one of the stadium’s radio booths. The Braves also released a press announcement following the tragedy which said the organization was deeply saddened and sent its prayers and condolences to Murrey’s family and friends.

A witness at the game told a local TV station that Murrey was sitting in the upper deck behind home plate. The players weren’t aware of what happened and the game continued with Rodriguez taking his turn at bat. Reports said Murrey was sitting in section 401 at Turner Field and he may have fallen about 50 feet onto his head. Emergency medical workers at the ground rushed to help Murrey and a doctor who was sitting nearby gave him CPR for about 10 minutes. He was then placed in a neck collar and stretchered out of the stadium.

The incident is being investigated by the Atlanta Police Department as they want to find out if he fell, jumped, or was pushed from the upper deck. Police spokespeople said they’re waiting until the medical examiners finish their reports before carrying on with their own investigation. The incident has resulted in many fans questioning the safety measures in place at Turner Field.
