Unhappy Swedish international striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has moved from Spanish club Barcelona to AC Milan of Italy for the season on a loan. Milan then has the option of buying the player, who previously played for Inter Milan, for €24 million next summer.
The move was another in the long line of ridiculous financial football happenings as Barcelona paid a whopping €46 million for Ibrahimovic last year as well as giving up striker Samuel Eto’o of Cameroon to Inter.
The 28-year-old Ibrahimovic has agreed to a four-year contract with AC Milan, and reportedly took a pay cut to be able to play back Italy. Ibrahimovic struggled in his season with Barcelona even though he scored 16 goals in 29 games, and when the club signed David Villa out of Valencia the writing was on the wall as he became lower on the pecking order.
Ibrahimovic said he’s looking forward to playing with Ronaldinho and Alexandre Pato up front for Milan and thinks they should form an unstoppable attacking force. He added that he’s not worried what the supporters of his former team, Inter Milan, will think of the move as they won a treble last year and are probably unconcerned and happy with what they have.
For some reason Ibrahimovic and Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola didn’t seem to get along and the player took a swipe at his former manager after making the transfer by saying he doesn’t know what Guardiola’s problem is and that he ruined his dream of playing in Spain. But it seems there were some legal differences between the player’s agent and the club and a lot of mudslinging followed.
Meanwhile, Barcelona is out a ton of money on the loan deal even if they are saving on paying Ibrahimovic’s wages. They tried to rationalize it by stating that if AC Milan buys him, the club will somehow save about €60 million.
But the question to be asked here is, what if AC Milan doesn’t decide to buy him?
