The NCAA tourney will not be the only madness to engulf the sports world in March. There will be 5 MMA major events within 25 days, giving new meaning to March coming in like a lion. Here’s a look at what’s coming up.
3.6 WEC 47: Bowles vs. Cruz
An excellent card to kick off the month. Brian Bowles defends his bantamweight title against Dominick Cruz. We also get the returns of Miguel Torres, who takes on the explosive Joseph Benavidez, and Jens Pulver. The always exciting Scott Jorgensen is also on the card, as well as impressive WEC newcomer Karen Darabedyan.
Check out the first look at the new season of “The Ultimate Fighter”. The rivalry between Tito and Chuck is intense, and I love that we’ll get to see them fight one more time.
Chuck knocked Tito out at UFC 47. Then he knocked him out again at UFC 66. Will there be a third KO? Or will the third time be finally be the charm for Tito?
It’s hard to believe that The Iceman hasn’t won since UFC 79. Tito just fought Forrest Griffin at UFC 106 and lost. He hasn’t won since 2006, last beating Ken Shamrock. Wow. Tito is 0-3-1 in his last 4 fights. Even with his horrible recent track record, Tito’s mouth is world-class.
Wanderlei Silva will fight Michael Bisping at UFC 110 in Australia this Saturday. His young son Thor is asking all of “The Axe Murderer” fans to come together in support.
Silva is a slight favorite in the fight according to a few different sportsbooks. Bisping was downright hammered by Dan Henderson at UFC 100, but he came back with a very impressive performance against Denis Kang at UFC 105. But like Hendo, Silva can throw vicious hands. When Silva lands one or two — and I have no doubt he will — will Bisping be able to hold up?
Since his return to the UFC — Silva fought 3 times in the UFC in the late 90’s — Silva is just 1-3, his lone win coming against Keith Jardine. But now Silva makes his first appearance at middleweight, where ostensibly his power should have an even bigger impact. He hopes Bisping will feel it.
Mike Tyson has lived quite the life. He’s been a world champion boxer, sidekick for Jimmy Kimmel and an actor in “The Hangover”. What you might not have known is Iron Mike also served as an MMA referee. From the video it looks as if Mike doesn’t know the rules all too well. But that’s all right because he didn’t eat anyone’s children. And the winner of the bout -Terry Etim- didn’t need long to win by triangle choke at WCFC’s “No Guts, No Glory”.
Etim is now in the UFC and has rattled off 4 straight wins in the lightweight division. He will fight Denis Siver at UFC 112.
Longtime MMA fans are very familiar with TapouT and everything they have done for the sport. Some new fans might just know the name as a brand they often see on t-shirts. But as seen in this video, the history of TapouT is a unique and inspirational story. Here is an interview with Dan "Punkass" Caldwell from Forbes.
For the first time ever, UFC 109 will feature two hall of famers in the same fight. Both are trying to remain in the mix as contenders in the light-heavyweight division.
Coleman just turned 45 in December. Couture will turn 47 in June. Both are coming off decision wins: Couture beat Brandon Vera and Coleman beat Stephan Bonnar.
If you don't like - or at least respect - Jens Pulver, you should check for your pulse. You're either dead or not human. Flimmaker Gregory Bayne is producing a documentary about Pulver entitled "Driven", described as "the film that will reveal the incredible story behind this legendary fighter". Here is an emotion-stirring clip from the doc.
