Mike Tyson accused of stealing ice cream bar at U.S. Open

Mike Tyson has probably done quite a few regrettable things in and out of the ring during his lifetime, such as biting a part of Evander Holyfield’s ear off during a heavyweight title fight back in 1997. His latest indiscretion has also made the headlines across the globe even if it is quite mild in comparison. It seems the former heavyweight champ was at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York City watching the U.S. Open tennis tournament and apparently stole an ice cream bar from a freezer. Yes, you read it right. Tyson was accused of taking the ice cream from a Ben and Jerry’s stand, which was worth $5.50, and walking away with it.

Russian hockey player Damir Ryspayev handed lifetime ban

Goonery still appears to be alive and well in professional Russian hockey as defenceman Damir Ryspayev of Barys Atana, a team in the Kontinental Hockey League, has been hit with a lifetime ban after going berserk in a recent preseason game. Ryspayev was originally handed a lesser punishment, but Kunlan Red Star of Beijing appealed it and the league then decided to throw the book at him after reviewing the video evidence of the violent incident. Ryspayev lost his marbles in an August game against Kunlan in a preseason tournament.

WBC says Olympic boxing needs to reinstate headgear

Mauricio Sulaiman, the president of the professional World Boxing Council, is pushing for headgear to be reinstated in amateur Olympic bouts. This comes after the AIBA (International Boxing Association) allowed male boxers to compete in the recent 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil without the traditional headgear. However, female boxers still fought with it on. Sulaiman said too many boxers received facial and head cuts during their bouts and this was because their heads were unprotected.

Sulaiman told the Los Angeles Times newspaper that he believed before the Olympics that the AIBA should think twice about their decision since it could be a dangerous one. He said the number of cuts suffered by boxers down in Brazil proved that he was right. Bantamweight Vladimir Nikitin of Russia was cut in his quarterfinal bout against Michael Conlan of Ireland and couldn’t continue in the competition. He had to pull out of his semifinal match against American Shakur Stevenson. Ironically, there was an uproar after Nikitin was handed the decision against Conlan as most observers felt the Irish boxer had clearly won.

Russia booted out of 2016 Paralympics

The Paralympics get underway on September 7th and run until the 18th in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but Russia won’t be competing in them. The nation has been banned from the event due to widespread state-sponsored doping allegations. The IPC (International Paralympic Committee) banned the country last month, but Russia then appealed to the CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport) in Switzerland. They didn’t have any luck though as the ban was upheld and it covers all Russian Paralympians. The IPC originally banned the country after a report outlined the doping scandal.
