A.J. Burnett gave up three homeruns in the first inning of the initial game of the three game series between the New York Yankees and Arizona Diamondbacks. The Arizona offense was not done then, as they finished the game with 10 runs in a 10-4 rout.
Justin Upton, Adam LaRoche and Mark Reynolds all mustered the ball over the fence in the first inning to jump start the Diamondbacks to a 5-0 start after one inning. Arizona added to it in the second inning when Miguel Montero doubled in Upton to make it 6-0. New York added their first run to the scoreboard in the third when Nick Swisher tripled in Brett Gardner. Montero picked up another RBI in the fourth, when this time he singled home Upton. The Yankees made a mini rally in the 6th when Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada added RBI’s to make it a 7-3 game. Justin Upton hit his second homerun of the game in the 8th; this time a three run shot to put the game out of reach at 10-3. The Yankees added a single tally on a Nick Swisher sac fly in the top of the ninth to round out the final score.
Arizona pounded out nine hits in four innings against Burnett. He has now lost four straight decisions, and is 6-6 on the season. Arizona saw Rodrigo Lopez go 8 innings, and allow 8 hits and 3 runs to move his season record to 3-6.
Arizona with the win moved to 28-43 overall, and 18-16 at Chase Field. The Diamondbacks continue to sit at the bottom of the ultra competitive MLB National League West. The Yankees, with the loss, dropped to just ½ game ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox in the American League East division.
The second game of the series will take place Tuesday evening. The Yankees will send left hander Andy Pettitte to the mound. He is 8-2 on the season. Arizona ace Dan Haren will put his 7-5 season record on the line. Dontrelle Willis of Arizona will face Javier Vazquez of New York in the final game on Wednesday.
