This NBA offseason will be amongst the most anticipated in league history as some of the best players in the NBA will be available to highest bidder. Not only could the league look drastically different next season if players like LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade choose to leave their current teams.
Even though all eyes will be on LeBron and the other high priced free agents, the Boston Celtics could be on the verge of some drastic changes and could go from a possible title contender to missing the playoffs.
Obviously, the Celtics missing the playoffs next season is a long shot, but if the team expects to put a competitive team on the floor once again, they will to convince three big-name players and head coach Doc Rivers to come back.
The one player that will officially become a free agent on July 1st is the sharp shooting Ray Allen. Despite setting an NBA Finals record by hitting eight three pointers in game two, Allen really struggled with his shot throughout the remainder of the Finals and Boston might pass on signing the future hall of fame shooting guard if another team like the New York Knicks or the Chicago Bulls make him a lucrative offer this summer.
Another player that could become a free agent this summer is the Boston Celtics leading scorer Paul Pierce. The former NBA Finals MVP is under contract for next season in which he will make $21.5 million dollars, but he can opt out of his contract and become a free agent.
I don’t believe that Pierce will opt out as $21.5 million dollars would be ridiculous to pass up on, but if head coach Doc Rivers decides not to come back and Ray Allen signs elsewhere, Pierce could be tempted to leave.
Rasheed Wallace is also another player on the Celtics that is contemplating his future as he is seriously considering retirement. All-Star forward Kevin Garnett and head coach Doc Rivers have both said that Wallace has probably played his last game in the NBA.
In my opinion, Doc Rivers’ decision will dictate what the Boston Celtics big-name players do this summer and the way it is looking right now, Rivers could be on his way out to concentrate on his family.
Anything can happen between now and the beginning of next season, but unless GM Danny Ainge can convince the majority of guys to stay in Boston, the Celtics could look drastically different next season.
