Despite wanting with all of his heart to enter the MLB Hall of Fame as a Chicago Cub, Andre Dawson will be wearing a Montreal Expos cap instead.
The Hall announced its decision Wednesday, and Dawson immediately reacted in disappointment. Poor Canada.
“I’m disappointed,” he said. “I can proudly say that because Chicago was my preference… It was a little gut-wrenching for me to hear that but it’s their decision.”
Dawson said he had hoped Hall officials would talk it over with him before making their choice, because he really wanted a chance to tell them that he believed his career with the Cubs is “what really catapulted [him] to Hall of Fame status.”
Of course, he relayed in a statement later that he “respects the Hall of Fame’s decision” to put an Expos logo on his cap, and “understands their responsibility to make sure the logo represents the greatest impact in [his] career.”
The Hawk, this year’s lone induction, broke into the majors and played his first 11 seasons with Montreal, batting .285 with 25 home runs and 838 RBIs. He earned the NL Rookie of the Year Award in 1977 and was named to three All-Star teams there. Dawson went on to play six seasons with the Cubs, where he snagged the 1987 MVP award after hitting .287 with 49 bombs and 137 RBIs on the year. Before hanging up his glove in 1996, he spent two seasons each with the Boston Red Sox and Florida Marlins.
Dawson’s induction will take place on July 25th in Cooperstown.

This is just a travesty! The players should be able to decide for themselves which cap they prefer to wear in the Hall. Another case of too much decision-making power by people who shouldn’t have any control.
Can’t believe it! I lived in Chicago when he played there and he was just awesome!
The story goes that he walked up to Cubs GM Dallas Green at spring training and showed him a blank check and said, I’ll play for the minimum if I have to. He signed a one year deal for $500k!. Then was rewarded the year after that.
He was a great player, great person, and I am really dissappointed that he can’t go in as a Cub.
