Twin brothers Jermell and Jermall Charlo made boxing history on May 21st 2016 by becoming the first set of twins to simultaneously hold world title belts in the same division. There have been other brothers crowned world champions in the same division at the same time in the past, such as heavyweights Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko, but never a set of twins. But to be honest, there have been a lot of brother combinations, but not many elite twins in the sport of boxing throughout history. Therefore, this is a milestone which may last for quite some time. It was also a birthday present for the twins as they celebrated their 26th birthdays just two days before their bouts.

The unbeaten identical twins from Richmond, Texas went into the history books at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas when Jermall, who happens to be the oldest brother by a minute, defended his IBF World Junior Middleweight Championship against former world titleholder Austin Trout and Jermell beat John Jackson for the vacant WBC Junior Middleweight crown. Jermall managed to beat Trout by a unanimous decision with scores of 115-113, 116-112 ad 116-112. The win saw him raise his record to 24-0 with 18 Kos.

The pressure was on Jermall to beat fellow American Trout win as Jermell won the WBC title by stopping Jackson of the U.S. Virgin Islands in the eighth round earlier. Charlo connected with a huge left hook and the bout was halted at the 51 second mark. Jermell’s record now stands at a perfect 27-0 with 13 Jos. Although the Charlo twins hold titles in the same division, the both said there are no plans to box each other in the ring and unite the belts. The two boxers have sparred numerous times in the past, but admitted they haven’t even done that for about a year now.

The brothers support each other by any means they can and also motivate each. If one of them holds a title belt it means the other will push himself to match his twin’s achievement. So far it has worked out will as they’re both unbeaten in the pro ranks. Jermell told the media, “We’ve got different ways that we push each other”, while Jermell added, “I just know that I’ve got his back. So if anything ever was to happen or he moves up in weight to another division them I’m going to go after that world title belt that he released.”

There’s a good chance that Jermall may move up in weight to the 160 lb. middleweight division first as he wants to take on Saul “Canelo” Alvarez of Mexico. However, Alvarez was just stripped of his WBC Championship and he’s believed to be in negotiations to fight Middleweight Champion Gennady Golovkin of Kazakhstan. However, after his bout on Saturday, he said he might stay in the junior middleweight division for a bit longer. Jermell, on the other hand, said he has no plans of moving up in weight.
