This past offseason there was a lot of talk on where future hall of fame guard Allen Iverson would land. Even though Iverson’s skills have yet to see some serious decline, the former NBA MVP was getting no love from teams around the league and was almost unemployment when the NBA regular season began.
Fortunately, the Memphis Grizzlies took a chance on four-time scoring champ by signing him to a one year deal just before the beginning of the season on September 10th, but the new partnership between AI and the Grizzlies didn’t last long as Iverson wasn’t not happy with his limited role and lack of playing time.
With Iverson clearly unhappy with his new situation with the Memphis Grizzlies, something had to be done and as a result they agreed to part ways and once again the 11-time All-Star was on the open market with virtually no teams interested in signing him after only playing three games in Memphis.
There was a lot of talk of the New York Knicks being interested in signing Allen Iverson as they were looking for some short term star power this season before they go after big fish like LeBron James and Dwyane Wade this summer when the two superstars become free agents, but instead Iverson got an offer from his original team in the Philadelphia 76ers after guard Lou Williams went down with an injury that would keep him out a considerable amount of time.
The 76ers showing interest in arguably one of the best players to ever play in Philly was a dream come true for Iverson as he took the opportunity as a way he could get back on top again instead of retiring from the NBA, but just like every move he has made this season, Iverson in Philly turned out to be a bust as well as the 76ers weren’t able to improve and now he has officially been shut down for the season so he can tend to his four year old daughter who is suffering from an undisclosed illness.
With Iverson deciding to sit out the rest of the year, I believe it is finally time for arguably one of the best guards to ever play the game to call it quits. I won’t be surprise to see Allen Iverson announce his retirement once again sometime in the near future.
