Allen Iverson Single-Handedly Saves The Sixers

Well, not quite.

The Philadelphia 76ers sold out the Wachovia Center Monday night, and everybody busted out their old No. 3 jerseys. Some folks even bought new ones. They enjoyed a sweet tribute video before the anticipated return of their old-and-new favorite, and rose from their seats more times than even Sunday mass would call for.

The baseline emptied and Allen Iverson headed toward the hoop, just like old times. Except not at all. The old school guard, a month removed from the game, scored just 11 points in the 38 long minutes he trucked his 34-year-old legs up and down the court.

The result was the Sixers’ 10th straight loss — a 93-83 defeat at the hands of his old team, the Denver Nuggets. Chauncey Billups scored 31 points and Carmelo Anthony added 14 to improve to 16-5 while Philadelphia fell to 5-16.

A.I. may not be the scoring champ Philly fans remember, but he’s certainly a welcome seat-filler and will no doubt add double-digit points to the board. He shot 36% from the field and sunk 3 of 4 free throws with five rebounds, six assists and a steal. Not bad for your first day back on the job.

“It is just going to take some time,” Iverson said, exhausted in his locker room chair.

The Sixers will take on LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers this Wednesday night at Wachovia, which should be another sell-out show.
