It seems as though Allen Iverson’s career in the NBA could be over as it is being reportedly that the ten time All-Star plans to retire.
Before this NBA season began it seemed as though Allen Iverson was headed for a fresh start in the league after signing a deal with the Memphis Grizzlies. Only few teams courted Iverson in the offseason after his nasty breakup with the Detroit Pistons last season, but the one team that was willing to give AI another chance and possibly a starting role was the Grizzlies.
The Miami Heat, Los Angeles Clippers and the Charlotte Bobcats thought about bringing Iverson into the mix, but weren’t willing to give the veteran guard a starting role which was what the future hall of famer was looking for and wasn’t able to get. The New York Knicks also had some interest in Iverson in the offseason., but nothing came of it and AI moved on to Memphis. Just recently when Iverson was released there were talks of New York being interested in bringing in Iverson once again, but it seemed like more the same as talks fell through and AI was left without team.
There is no arguing the fact that Allen Iverson is headed to the hall of fame and will go down as one of the best guards ever to play the game, but no one has wanted to take a chance on him after he was released from the Memphis Grizzlies and I believe that is the reason for his retirement.
Even though Iverson has decided to call it quits as of right now, I don’t think we have seen the last of the superstar guard in this league as he will almost certainly get picked up by one of the best teams in the league when it comes playoff time.
At the end of every regular season the teams headed for the playoffs usually reach out to unemployed veterans like Allen Iverson to bolster their rosters in an effort to make a championship run. Iverson would obviously be just insurance for one of the big boys like the Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics or Cleveland Cavaliers heading into the playoffs, but pending injuries he could have big role for one of the championship contenders in the East or West.
