Alex Burrows is a Maniac

Alex Burrows accomplished something for the Vancouver Canucks that hadn’t been done in 23 years.

The left-winger scored three goals for his second straight hat trick Thursday night to help beat the Phoenix Coyotes 4-0. What makes this even more impressive is that no Canucks player has pulled that off since Petri Skriko did it during the 1986-87 season. Yes, some of you rugrats were not even born yet.

“My linemates found me a couple times there and made great plays. It makes my job a lot easier,” Burrows said. “Right now I’m just getting shots through and they’re finding ways to beat goalies. Obviously it’s fun right now.”

Henrik Sedin assisted on each of Burrows’ goals to move atop the NHL scoring race, putting himself three points ahead of San Jose Sharks’ center Joe Thornton. Mikael Samuelsson also scored for the Canucks, who are riding are four game wave and have won 11 of 14 to move into a tie with the Calgary Flames for first place in the Northwest Division.

Burrows opened the scoring 11:35 in when he put a sharp shot over Coyotes goalie Ilya Bryzgalov, who made 20 saves. The second came at 1:01 on the third as he polished off a three-way passing play with the Sedin boys, with Henrik extending his point streak to eight games. Burrows got his third goal with a little help from the Sedins at 4:56 as fans covered the ice with hats.

Meanwhile, Roberto Luongo made 31 saves for his 50th NHL shutout and third of the season. He’s got quite a ways to go before catching up with Canadian Olympic teammate Martin Brodeur, who has an NHL-record 106 career regular-season shutouts.
