The New York Yankees definitely weren’t happy with slugger Alex Rodriguez when he returned to action this season following a year-long suspension for his involvement with performance-enhancing drugs. Rodriguez was due some bonus money for reaching some milestones this year and the organization stated that it didn’t intend on honouring him in any way on or off the diamond and with any extra cash. However, it appears the two parties have now kissed and partially made up. The Yankees reportedly owed Rodriguez $6 million for reaching 3,000 hits and they came to an agreement that $3.5 million of that bonus will be handed over to charities by the club.
Therefore, it looks like the player will receive the other $2.5 million. Rodriguez reached the 3,000 hit mark in June and just a few weeks later the Yankees and Rodriguez came to a settlement regarding the bonus money that was written into his contract. Now, the baseball club has announced that Rodriguez will also be honoured for his 3,000th hit during a pregame ceremony at Yankee Stadium before the team’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays on September 13th. The Yankees released a press statement regarding the ceremony and said gates will open two hours before the game so fans can get in the stadium early to see the presentation.
His 3,000th hit came back on June 19th and it was the 29th time in MLB history that a player has reached the coveted milestone. He also did it in style as the hit was a solo home run off of pitcher Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers. Rodriguez was just the third player to reach the 3,000 hit plateau with a home run. The others were Wade Boggs and Derek Jeter, who also played for the Yankees. However, Jeter and Rodriguez are the only two players in Yankee history to collect their 3,000th hits when playing for the franchise. They’re also the only two players to reach the milestone at Yankee Stadium.
Rodriguez is now just one of three players in MLB history to hit 600 home runs and 3,000 hits with the other two being Henry Aaron and Willie Mays. The 40-year-old Rodriguez has been the Yankees designated hitter this season and has been one of the team’s most productive players with 25 home runs as of August 17. If he can keep up the same pace for the rest of his contract with the club over the next two seasons, Rodriguez would finish his time with the Yankees with approximately 756 home runs. This would leave him half a dozen short of the all-time record held by Barry Bonds.
