A lot of people believe that age is just a number or a state of mind, and 91-year-old Harriette Thompson is definitely one of them. The old-age pensioner recently set a record at the Rock n Roll Marathon in San Diego, California on June 1 for women aged 90 years and older. It’s even hard to believe that such a category even exists, but it does and Thompson is the new Queen of it. The two-time survivor of cancer finished the event, which was her 15th marathon, in seven hours and seven minutes.
She told the press the next day that she feels great, but doesn’t really understand what all the fuss is about. She stated, “I can’t believe this is happening. I just ran another marathon and I can’t believe it got all this attention.” Thompson didn’t run her first marathon until the age of 76, which was a quarter of a century ago. She ran it to help raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and hasn’t looked back since. She’s now raised more than $90,000 for the charity over the years.
Thompson’s record time was even more impressive considering she recently had trouble standing due to radiation treatment to her legs. She said her training routine consisted of 60 minutes on the elliptical and then running a 5K event a week before the marathon. She said her longest run during training was just six miles. Thompson remarked that she didn’t have any problem with the run until she reached the 17-mile mark and then she began to struggle slightly.
She stated that she paid attention to the bands playing after each mile to keep from becoming bored. “Having all those dance bands and drums made me pick up the tempo a little bit.” When Thompson crossed the finish line she was met by a nephew and then went out to celebrate her record by downing a popsicle. She announced that she’ll probably run another marathon, but hopes to have more time to train for it. Thompson admitted she doesn’t know how much longer she’ll be around, but since she’s recovering from the radiation treatments she’ll probably do better in her next outing.
