George Foreman won the heavyweight title at the age of 45 and Bernard Hopkins just lost his light heavyweight crown at 49. However, 62-year-old actor Mickey Rourke makes them look like youngsters as he plans on entering the ring in Russia on Saturday,, November 29th to resume his pro boxing career. Rourke is scheduled to take on a 29-year-old named Elliot Seymour in a five-round contest in Moscow as part of the undercard to the Ruslan Provodnikov vs Jose Luis Castillo contest.
Rourke, who was born in Schenectady, New York and grew up in Miami, Florida, was a decent enough boxer when he was young and racked up a record of 27-3 as an amateur between 1964 and 1973. He was just 21 years old when he finished his amateur career. He then turned to acting and has starred in numerous Hollywood movies over the years such as The Wrestler, 1941, Heaven’s Gate, Body Heat, Diner, Rumble Fish, The Motorcycle Boy, The Pope of Greenwich Village, The Year of the Dragon, 9½ Weeks, Angel Heart, Barfly, A Prayer for the Dying, Desperate Hours, Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man, Get Carter, Iron Man 2, and The Expendables.
Rourke returned to boxing at the age of 39 and had his first professional match in May of 1991 when he took on Steve Powell in a four round bout in Florida. The light heavyweight retired undefeated in 1994 after compiling a record of 6-0-2 with 4 Kos. Just one of his opponents had winning records and between the eight of them had a combined mark of 40-79-8. His scheduled opponent Seymour hails from Pasadena, California and is a light middleweight who has a 1-8 record as a pro. His only win came by way of a fourth-round knockout against John Dunham in his second pro fight in 2009. Rourke said he always wanted to box in Russia and the sport has taught him determination, patience, concentration, and respect and it’s been a big part of his life.
Top trainer Freddie Roach has been working out with Rourke since he also trained him back in the 1990s. Roach’s prized pupil Manny Pacquiao just won a wide 12-round unanimous decision over Chris Algieri in Macau, China on November 22nd. Rourke was just 12 when he took up boxing and worked out at places such as the famous 5th Street Gym in Miami. Seventeen of his 27 amateur wins came by way of knockout and he reportedly had a streak of 12 straight Kos. He was paid just $250 when he made his pro debut, but after two years had allegedly earned $1 million.
When Rourke was fighting professionally his plan was to have 16 bouts and then fight for a world championship, but never made it that far. Apparently all the plastic surgery procedures Rourke received over the years was due to facial injuries he suffered as a boxer.
