All Major League Baseball players know that they may have to take a drug test sooner or later and this includes Minor Leaguer’s too. However, some of them simply don’t have the willpower or intestinal fortitude to just say no to drugs. It’s hard to believe that players are still failing these tests even though their careers may depend on them. Meet L.J. Mazzilli, the latest ball player to be hit with a major suspension. Mazzilli is a prospect of the New York Mets and son of former MLB player and manager Lee Mazzilli.
Mazzilli Jr. was hit with a 50-game suspension at Christmas time for failing a drug test for the second time and violating the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment program and the MLB drug policy. But the suspension wasn’t for performance-enhancing drugs it was for what MLB called “a drug of abuse.” Therefore Mazzilli could have been taking one of numerous abuseful drugs that can be found on the streets of America. The Mets released a statement regarding the suspension, which will be unpaid by the way, and said that Mazzilli will be getting some professional counseling to help him with his problem.
Mazzilli also released a press statement regarding the situation and said that he made a bad decision and unfortunately he can’t go back in time and change it. He said that he regrets his actions and is very sorry and ashamed at what he’s done. He added that there’s no excuse considering everything the Mets, his fans and loved ones have given him during his life, which is the chance to live out his childhood dream of playing in the Major Leagues.
His father Lee Mazzilli also came out and spoke to the press and remarked, “There is nothing politically correct that I could say that can soften the blow. My son made a mistake. Just like any other parent out there, we are disappointed and hurt when our children make bad decisions. However, we are proud of our son for seeking professional help on his own.”
The 24-year-old L.J. Mazzilli is a second baseman who was a fourth-round selection in the MLB Draft in 2013 by the Mets. He played with a couple of teams in the 2014 campaign as he split his time between Class A Savannah and Class A advanced Port St. Lucie. Mazzilli had a promising year as he belted 11 home runs and 79 RBIs in 131 games and finished the season with 14 stolen bases and a .301 batting average. His father managed the Baltimore Orioles from 2004 to 2005 and also played with the Mets, New York Yankees, Texas Rangers, Toronto Blue Jays, and Pittsburgh Pirates.
