49ers Shut Down Steelers On Monday Night

The San Francisco 49ers took advantage of four Ben Roethlisberger turnovers to coast to a 20-3 home win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in a Monday Night Football matchup that was twice delayed by power outages. With the win, the Niners control their destiny for a first-round bye, while the Steelers are looking at a wild card unless they can catch the Baltimore Ravens.

San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith threw for only 187 yards, but unlike the opposing quarterback/probable rapist, Smith committed no turnovers and threw for a touchdown pass.  And he had perhaps the line of the night: “Defense played lights out. No pun intended.”

The lights went out before the game, delaying the kickoff for 20 minutes, and then again in the second quarter for another 16-minute delay. One Steeler defender even accused the 49ers of orchestrating the outages as a political ploy as they try to push through a new stadium in suburban Santa Clara for 2014. “I just feel like San Francisco took a big stage to show the NFL and to show the state of California that they needed a new stadium,” said Steelers safety Ryan Clark. “I think it was a very strategic move and Candlestick [Park, the 49ers stadium for the last 40 years] may be no more very soon.”

The 49ers defense entered the NFL record books as the first team to not allow a single rushing touchdown in the first 14 games of a season. Roethlisberger was playing just 11 days after suffering a high ankle sprain in a Thursday night win over the Browns, but the probably rapist didn’t use his injury as an excuse for his three interceptions and one fumble. “I played a bad football game,” said Roethlisberger. “I turned the ball over. That one is on me.”
