There was good news and bad news for the San Francisco 49ers. Good news: the 49ers beat the Cardinals 27-6 on Monday Night Football. Bad news: the 49ers are still just 4-7. Good news: the 49ers are just one game out of first in the NFC West, with games left against all three division rivals. Bad news: 49ers star running back Frank Gore got hurt and is out for the year. OK news: Brian Westbrook filled in well for Gore.
For the Cardinals, the brightest highlight/lowlight was an angry, profanity-laced tirade at the postgame press conference from quarterback Derek Anderson. ESPN’s broadcast caught Anderson apparently laughing on the sidelines while down 18 points in the fourth quarter, and Anderson did not appreciate getting asked about it at all:
Anderson’s responses:
What Deuce and I talk about is nobody else’s business. It wasn’t funny — I wasn’t laughing about anything. Okay, that’s fine. That’s fine, that’s fine, that’s fine. That’s fine. I’m not laughing about it. You think this is funny? I take this shit serious! Real serious! I put my heart and soul into this shit every single week! I’m’ just telling you right now what I do every single week! Every single week! I put my freakin’ heart and soul into this, I study my ass off! I don’t go out there and laugh! It’s not funny! Nothing’s funny to me! I don’t want to go out there and get embarrassed on Monday Night Football in front of everybody! I’m telling you right now! We were talking! Deuce and I were talking! I’m done.
Meanwhile, the 49ers will have to continue to rely on Westbrook, who signed with the 49ers late this offseason and had only carried five times for nine yards all season before Monday night’s game. Monday night, Westbrook ran for 66 yards and a touchdown in the first half, and ended up with 136 yards rushing on 23 carries. Still Gore leaves big shoes to fill. In eleven games this season, Gore rushed for 853 yards and caught 46 balls for another 452 yards.
Next week, the 49ers visit the Packers, which should be awfully tough and will likely mean that a home game against the 5-6 Seahawks the following Sunday will be a must-win.
