With the NFL regular season fast approaching, we at SportsUntapped are taking our crystal balls out of storage and examining each team’s full 16-game schedule to prognosticate how the 2012 season will play out. We’ll look at all 32 teams and reveal each one’s final record. Next up: rookie sensation Robert Griffin III and the Washington Redskins, who’ll try to get back to the postseason for the first time since the the second Gibbs era ended in 2007.

WASHINGTON REDSKINS

Last year’s record: 5-11

Vegas Over/Under on 2012 Regular Season Wins: 6.5

First four games:

Sep 9 @New Orleans 1:00 pm
Sep 16 @St. Louis 4:05 pm
Sep 23 Cincinnati 1:00 pm
Sep 30 @Tampa Bay 4:25 pm

RGIII will certainly get tested early opening on the road against the Saints, and with two more September road games against lesser opponents. The Redskins got off to a fast start with Rex Grossman last year, opening 3-1 before losing 10 of their last 12. I see the Redskins bouncing back from a opening loss in New Orleans by winning two of their next three for a 2-2 September.

Second four games:

Oct 7 Atlanta 1:00 pm
Oct 14 Minnesota 4:25 pm
Oct 21 @N.Y. Giants 1:00 pm
Oct 28 @Pittsburgh 1:00 pm

The Redskins swept the Giants last year, so it’s not inconceivable that they’ll be able to win in the Meadowlands again this year. Still, three losses look likely here, putting the Redskins at 3-5 midway through the season.

First four games of the second half:

Nov 4 Carolina 1:00 pm
Week 10 BYE
Nov 18 Philadelphia 1:00 pm
Nov 22 @Dallas 4:15 pm
Dec 3 N.Y. Giants 8:30 pm

Coming out of the bye, the Redskins face three straight tough division games. I see the Redskins beating Cam Newton and the Panthers at home, then losing two straight out of the bye before beating the Giants at home. That puts them almost out of the playoff race at 5-7 through 12 games.

Last four games:

Dec 9 Baltimore 1:00 pm
Dec 16 @Cleveland 1:00 pm
Dec 23 @Philadelphia 1:00 pm
Dec 30 Dallas 1:00 pm

Even at home, the Redskins probably lose to the Ravens, but the Skins should be able to play spoiler and steal at least one of their last two games against the Eagles and Cowboys. Two wins in this stretch and the Redskins finish at 7-9, two games better than the year before.
