2012 NFL Predictions & Preview: Tampa Bay Buccaneers 5-11

With the NFL regular season fast approaching, we at SportsUntapped are taking our crystal balls out of storage and examining each team’s full 16-game schedule to prognosticate how the 2012 season will play out. We’ll look at all 32 teams and reveal each one’s final record. Next up: Josh Freeman and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who’ll try to bounce back from a disastrous 2011 season.

Last year’s record: 4-12

Vegas Over/Under on 2012 Regular Season Wins: 6

First four games:

Sep 9 Carolina 4:25 pm
Sep 16 @N.Y. Giants 1:00 pm
Sep 23 @Dallas 1:00 pm
Sep 30 Washington 4:25 pm

The Buccaneers haven’t had back-to-back losing seasons since 2003-2004, and started last season 4-2 before losing their final ten games. They’ll probably be home underdogs in Week 1 against Cam Newton and the Panthers, but should have a good chance to win that game. They’ll definitely struggle the following two weeks and probably end up 1-3 after the first month of the season.

Second four games:

Week 5 BYE
Oct 14 Kansas City 1:00 pm
Oct 21 New Orleans 1:00 pm
Oct 25 @Minnesota 8:20 pm
Nov 4 @Oakland 4:05 pm

The Bucs did beat the Saints at home last season for their fourth and final win of the year. Two years in a row is probably pushing it, but they should beat the Chiefs out of the bye and probably the Vikings on the road (Tampa’s first and only road win of 2011 came in Minnesota). With a loss in Oakland in Week 9, the Bucs will be 3-5 halfway through the season.

First four games of the second half:

Nov 11 San Diego 1:00 pm
Nov 18 @Carolina 1:00 pm
Nov 25 Atlanta 1:00 pm
Dec 2 @Denver 4:05 pm

I wouldn’t be shocked if the Bucs won any one of these games, but it’s hard to see them winning multiple games after falling apart for the last 10 games last year. Three losses here and their season is virtually over at 4-8 with four to play.

Last four games:

Dec 9 Philadelphia 1:00 pm
Dec 16 @New Orleans 1:00 pm
Dec 23 St. Louis 1:00 pm
Dec 30 @Atlanta 1:00 pm

Without much to play for besides maybe being sick of two years of almost constant losing, I again don’t see the Bucs pulling off multiple upsets. One more win does give them a very slight improvement over last year to 5-11 in 2012.
