With the NFL regular season fast approaching, we at SportsUntapped are taking our crystal balls out of storage and examining each team’s full 16-game schedule to prognosticate how the 2012 season will play out. We’ll look at all 32 teams and reveal each one’s final record. Next up: Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys, who haven’t been to the playoffs since 2009.

Last year’s record: 8-8

Vegas Over/Under on 2012 Regular Season Wins: 8.5

First four games:
Sep 5 @N.Y. Giants 8:30 pm
Sep 16 @Seattle 4:05 pm
Sep 23 Tampa Bay 1:00 pm
Oct 1 Chicago 8:30 pm

The Cowboys should certainly be up for the opener against the Giants, as losing to New York in the final game of the regular season kept Dallas out of the playoffs last year. Still, I think most of these games are toss-ups and expect the Cowboys to be 2-2 through their first four games.

Second four games:

Week 5 BYE
Oct 14 @Baltimore 1:00 pm
Oct 21 @Carolina 1:00 pm
Oct 28 N.Y. Giants 4:25 pm
Nov 4 @Atlanta 8:20 pm

A pair of tough road games plus the Giants at home make this a pretty tough stretch for the Cowboys. I would be on two more losses here and a 4-4 record halfway through the season.

First four games of the second half:

Nov 11 @Philadelphia 4:25 pm
Nov 18 Cleveland 1:00 pm
Nov 22 Washington 4:15 pm
Dec 2 Philadelphia 8:20 pm

The Cowboys both games against the Eagles last year by double digits, but I think they find a way to win one this year. They also won a pair of close games against the Redskins last year, and should be able to win against a less experienced team on Thanksgiving Day. Three wins in this stretch gets them to 7-5 heading down the stretch.

Last four games:

Dec 9 @Cincinnati 1:00 pm
Dec 16 Pittsburgh 4:25 pm
Dec 23 New Orleans 1:00 pm
Dec 30 @Washington 1:00 pm

The Cowboys have tended to choke down the stretch in recent years, so it’s hard to see them beating the Steelers and Saints, even with both games at home. They probably scratch out two wins to end 9-7 for their first winning season since 2009, then sweat out a tiebreaker to see if they make the playoffs.
